Because Prescott was Arizona's first territorial capital, the downtown area facing Thumb Butte was one of the first places to be populated. Early settlers to Prescott were looking for an iconic landmark not only to stand as a "signpost" but to also market Prescott to the eastern U.S. Originally, it is rumored that Rimrock in Chino Valley was going to be Prescott's original location. A similar, but much smaller peak exists. Someone must have sighted Thumb Butte in the distance and headed toward what was to be Everybody's Hometown!
As a result, properties near Thumb Butte are some of the oldest neighborhoods in Prescott. The views are spectacular looking north and west. Hassayampa Village, and Forest Trails are two such communities located on Thumb Butte Road. If you're looking to build in a non-HOA area, just keep going up the road a little! Homes near Granite Mountain tend to be built into the forest a little more, and the views are not quite as spectacular. But if you're looking for views OF Granite Mountain, try Forest Highlands, American Ranch, Pinon Oaks, Royal Oaks, and just about any community built on a hill like Prescott Lakes and Eagle Ridge Estates.
Prescott Valley also has several scenic building sights. Prescott Ridge near Mingus Mountain is one such community with 40 acre minimum building sites. Stoneridge is also known to have fantastic golf course views.
